Why community groups should count
Birds bring people together, and so can your group.
Whether you’re a local environment group, gardening club, local scouts group, social group or neighbourhood association, the Aussie Bird Count is a fun and meaningful way to spend time outdoors, spark conversation and take part in a national citizen science project.
It’s free, easy, and open to everyone — no bird knowledge required.

How community group can get involved
Step 1: Register
Sign up your group to receive our free participation toolkit and updates.
Step 2: Promote
Use our posters to invite your community group to take part.
Step 3: Host
Plan a group bird count in a local park or nature reserve, and count together.
Step 4: Share
Celebrate your group’s contribution to citizen science by sharing photos or stories on social media. Don’t forget to tag @birdlifeoz

20 minutes
Just spend 20 minutes in your favourite outdoor space and tell us about the birds you see during that period.
